Last Move

The last move, I promise! Sorry to relocate for the third time, but it's been a hassle signing in and out because I changed Gmail addresses. In any case,

The Pankriatist

Pankration was the Ancient Greeks' UFC, if I may. A mix of wrestling and fisticuffs, it was an incredibly intense sport and Olympic event. Men fought butt naked with leather arm wraps, which they would very illegally hide spikes or other sharp things within. No eye gouging; otherwise, it was essentially the old school vale tudo (no rules fighting).

My boyfriend took me to a park a few months ago and standing alone on a mound was a really compelling, sad statue of an old Pankriatist. You could tell from the look on the man's face that it would be his last fight; despite being in wonderful shape, he was aged, scarred, and his shoulders sagged. There was something about it that resonated with me, whether it was the connection we had as fighters, or that near primal desire to never give up.

We're on talking terms now.

Neglect! I dish it out to all my blogs evenly, so don't feel so left out.

The last month of school really arted me out, so this is actually the first time in a while I've done a finished piece, or even touched my tablet. This is an illustration for a story in this month's issue of Shousetsu Bang*Bang. Drew my boyfriend's face only because his nose is an absolutely fantastic shape to draw; strange that I don't even need reference to draw him anymore!

I promise to be a more productive artist this summer. It's hard when you live close to a beach, though! Trust me!

My thoughts on underrated clothing pieces

... is that they should not be so underrated! In particular, I think hats and capes are neglected. I saw a Zara cape while I was in LA that I very much wanted, but couldn't find my size. Woe is me! So instead I put it on this lovely lady.

Pancakes for Hellboy

I finally got around to doing a lot of scanning last night (I hate the process; I wish my printer were a little less crappy and little more efficient), and I totally forgot about this sketch! I will get around to spiffying it up a bit. Love me some color!

Strange how Davis-y my Abe and Kate are. Liz tends to look more generic by my hand; and I'm still completely incapable of drawing Devon without making him look doofy. But I guess he's supposed to be a little bit doofy, huh?

I haven't read Hellboy In Mexico yet, but I'm dying to. Also, have you seen the giant B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth title logo? It is so epic! There was such a huge... thing in the last issue of B.P.R.D. that I can't possibly divulge ever that was just. It. Blew. My. Mind. And makes me love Abe all the more.

Wait. I haven't thought about this in forever, but... When's Daimio coming back? Did I miss something?

In more important news, rest in peace, Frank Frazetta. There is a great chunk of the RISD illustration department mourning for you.

There are a lot of things in this world that I really love. These days I've been thinking about it a lot, and I've realized that, despite my spending habits, the simple things are really what make me happy, and that I really don't need a lot of extra stuff in my life.

In spite of all my whining lately, I really have nothing to complain about, huh?

Mythology

Why is mythology important? Why is it still relevant to modern times?

After reading Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth (which I have very mixed feelings about but still highly recommend) for Oren Sherman's illustration class, we were asked to illustrate myths of our choosing. Apparently I was enamored with myths having to do with birth or something, because I ended up picking Momotaro (Peach Boy) and Amaterasu emerging from the cave after hiding away.

Sketches!

(Unfortunately, I've discovered the difference in vibrance from my beloved ASUS monitor to my MacBook Pro. Even after painstaking color calibration, it seems the MacBook in combination with my browser settings just don't do it.)

In any case, here is the finished Momotaro! Which, evidently, still needs some work, but I'm very much done with it if I'm to get Amaterasu done by Wednesday, on top of other work. Mais c'est la vie!

桃太郎!

He came out a good amount differently than the sketch. I think I like the sketch more. :/
